On our second day at Aaron Reed’s house, we had the best of intentions to get up early and hit 5 mile before it got blown out by swimmers. Unfortunately, after a two-year drought, the Texas weather has turned quite wet this summer, and we were greeted first thing by rain. It was nearly noon when things cleared up and we made it back to the spot, and by that time, several people had already beaten us there.
Discouraged by not dissuaded, we asked the kids joyfully jumping down the dam if they wanted to see a show. To our crew’s surprise, they readily agreed. The pressure was on though, as every bail was met with groans. At one point a boy about 10 years old asked me, “Is he going to land that?” When I said yes he of course asked, “Will it be on the Internet?” And when some would would ride away, shouts of glee would erupt from the onlookers.
The spectators patience was much appreciated and with only one security-related scare, Clint and Stefan were able to take sets before we decided to move on. Everyone was feeling tired from the day before, and Aaron didn’t want to jump down gaps because of his leg, so we headed back to Lake Placid to take another boat set.
Unfortunately the rain decided to join us, but only for the first half of the set. Once it cleared off, Aaron entertained us all with some Sfumato-throwback lines. After that show, the only thing really left to do with our two days in Texas was eat more tacos, so Chef Reed again donned is apron and whipped up a feast.
Special thanks to Aaron and Jami Reed for their hospitality and Gabe Lucas for lending us Barney. As it turned out we timed our visit perfectly, since the next day the Guadalupe River would rise 12 feet and become a stew of smashed boats from a flash flood. So thanks to Mother Nature too for her relative cooperation.
