Henderson, Nev. – Henderson is riding the wave on wake sports. The World Wake Association (WWA) and Malibu Boats selected the destination to open its 2017 Malibu WWA Rider Experience championship series. Hundreds of wakeboarders will travel to Henderson to compete in the central region championships at Lake Las Vegas from May 5 through May 7. Spectator admission is free; however, rider entry fees as follows:

• Amateur Regional Championship: $75.00
• Amateur Wakesurf Competition: $75.00
• Jr. Pro Men: $100.00
• Pro Card Qualifier: $100.00
• Freeride Friday: $25.00
• Wakesurf Experience: $25.00
• Judges Experience: $25.00

Next month’s Malibu WWA Rider Experience is hosted by Boulder Boats. It is the third year the Henderson-based business has hosted the event and the second year it has been held at Lake Las Vegas. According to organizers, 13 states, including Nevada, Texas, Wyoming and North Dakota, will be represented by the best athletes in amateur competition at this year’s Malibu WWA Rider Experience.

“It is an honor to be able to bring the Malibu WWA Rider Experience back to the City of Henderson,” said Barbra Coffee, Director of the City of Henderson Economic Development & Tourism Department. “The destination has been a host site for a number of elite national and international sporting events for many years. The fact sports organizers continue to choose Henderson as the location for their world-class events is a true testament to our desire to be a global sports destination.”

Amateur wakeboarders will compete in the central region championships on May 6. The regional championship serves as a qualifier to the 2017 WWA Wakeboard National Championships, which will be held in Georgia. Next month’s competition will also feature a pro card qualifier, where riders try to qualify to become one of the world’s elite wakeboard athletes.

In addition to the wakeboard contests, the Malibu WWA Rider Experience includes family-oriented activities like the Freeride Friday. Sessions will allow riders to practice wakeboarding behind the towboat. Malibu Boats professional team riders like Oli Derome, Tarah Mikacich, Tony Carroll, Jeff Langley and Chad Sharpe will be on hand to offer tips, meet with fans and show off their skills on the water.

Other activities include a judges experience/rider development, where top WWA officials explain how judging works and what judges look for in competitive wakeboarding, and a wakesurf experience.
