In August of last year CWB and Mastercraft pro team rider Josh Palma “went to hollywood” as they say, or in this case, Shreveport, Louisiana. He had somehow been put in contact with the stunt director of a new 3d movie that was being shot at the time who requested for him to join the shoot and do some wakeboard doubling for one of their lead actors. The deal was made and Palma was off to the swampland only to re-surface at surf expo fully disguised as a clean cut, upstanding citizen (see bottom picture). Below is a brief insight of Josh’s experiences as well as a sneak peak of Josh’s work on the big screen…
A sexy summer weekend turns into a blood-soaked nightmare for a group of college students trapped on an island surrounded by voracious underwater predators in Shark Night 3D, a terrifying thrill ride from director David R. Ellis (The Final Destination, Snakes on a Plane), featuring a red-hot young cast including Sara Paxton (Superhero Movie, The Last House on the Left), Dustin Milligan (90210, Slither), Chris Carmack (The O.C.), Joel Moore (Avatar), Chris Zylka (The Amazing Spider-Man) and Katharine McPhee (The House Bunny). Arriving by boat at her family’s Louisiana lake island cabin, Sara (Sara Paxton) and her friends quickly strip down to their swimsuits for a weekend of fun in the sun. But when star football player Malik (Sinqua Walls) stumbles from the salt-water lake with his arm torn off, the party mood quickly evaporates. Assuming the injury was caused by a freak wake-boarding accident, the group realizes they have to get Malik to a hospital on the other side of the lake, and fast. But as they set out in a tiny speedboat, the college friends discover the lake has been stocked with hundreds of massive, flesh-eating sharks! As they face one grisly death after another, Sara and the others struggle desperately to fend off the sharks, get help and stay alive long enough to reach the safety of dry land.
Movie Description from MovieWeb.com
Josh, first off, tell us how the whole gig was set up…How did you find your way onto the set of a David R. Ellis Film?
Well a while back Zane (Schwenk) was actually a member of SAG (Screen Actors Guild) and had some experience doing stunt work for films. Zane was contacted by a stunt coordinator he had worked with in the past who let him know they were in need of a wakeboard stunt double for this movie, and luckily Zane gave them my info. Jeff Dashnaw contacted me who was the stunt coordinator for the movie (Inglorious Bastards, Death proof, Whip It, 21, Sin City) and let me know that he had seen my pictures / video and that I would be perfect for the part!
How long did the shoot last?
Well Initially It was supposed to be only two weeks but that ended up morphing into nearly two full months. Once I was on set and working with the director and stunt coordinator we realized that there were more stunts I was qualified to do beyond just wakeboarding. It was all water based stuff like underwater fighting vs. animatronic sharks in attack scenes, and then some crashes off of jet skis as well.
Who was the most famous Actress / Actor you met on the set?
Joel David Moore. He was the robot guy in Grandma’s Boy and also the 2nd male lead in Avatar.
So are you heading to the MTV movie awards this year?
Ummm…I’m really hoping so.
If you get the invite which single babe are you going to sit next to?
Well I don’t know if she’s single but I’m sort of on the Taylor Swift bandwagon. Her or Shakira who I’ve also had a thing for, or maybe I can just sit between the two of them? Haha.
Will you be doing more stunt work in the future?
Yeah definitely, I’ve been keeping in touch with Jeff and the other stunt personnel from the film. They’re a tight knit group, a lot like a family, just a small group of guys with all different skills who are constantly referring work to one another, so hopefully in the next year or so I’ll find some more stunts! I’m finishing up my Screen Actors Guild membership now so I will be fully qualified to work on more films in the future.
One last question, how much did they pay you to chop the dreads off?
Enough. Let’s just say It would have paid for the 5 years of haircuts I never had…haha!
