Northwest double up set for July 22
Bakes NWI grows in second year

SEATTLE – Best Trick. Biggest Air. Worst Crash. Those are the titles 12 riders will be trying to reach at the 2006 Bakes Northwest Wakeboard Invitational (NWI) on July 22, 2006 at Renton’s Gene Coulon Park on Lake Washington. Professionals and top local talent from the region will compete for $3,500 in cash prizes and crowned King of the Northwest in this second annual double up contest.

The rider pulling down the best trick during the event will take home $2,000 – the event’s top prize. For the rider landing the biggest air during the competition, a $1,000 prize will be awarded. Worst Crash – a category expected to have several frontrunners in 2006 due to Lake Washington’s rolling waters – pulls down $500 for the winner.

The new prize categories are a change from the 2005 event where Nick Jones defeated Mike Ennen in the final, outlasting all other competitors in a head-to-head elimination format. Robby Carter placed third last summer in the event.

“The 2006 Bakes NWI is going to be huge,” said John Thorburn of the Northwest Marine Trade Association (NMTA) – organizers of the event. “Last year’s competition really laid the foundation for this event to grow and serve as the region’s premier tournament. Aside from the Portland Stop for the Pro Tour, there will not be a bigger event for wakeboarding in the Northwest this summer.”

The Professional Wakeboard Tour is in Portland July 15-16 – the weekend prior to the Bakes NWI double up.

The day long event will be promoted during a weeklong advertising blitz on Funky Monkey 104.9 FM (KFNK). The local rock station will also be on site throughout the competition.

The Bakes NWI coincides with the fourth annual Boatstock event – NMTA’s two-day boat demo inviting the public to take free boat rides on the latest runabouts, fishing boats, tournament boats and sailboats. Boatstock and the Bakes NWI is part of IKEA Renton River Days.
