The First-Ever Boardshort and Bikini Vending Machine Will Be Unveiled This August

(Huntington Beach, CA) July 31, 2009 — Quiksilver has partnered up with The Standard to reissue a limited collection of original boardshorts from the 70s and 80s. Starting August 8, The Standard Boardshorts by Quiksilver and Quiksilver women’s bikinis will be sold through the first-ever boardshort/bikini vending machines. The first vending machine will be located on the rooftop pool deck at The Standard, Downtown LA. The boardshorts are also available online at SHOPTHESTANDARD.COM and at The Standard Boutiques starting today.

The Standard Boardshorts by Quiksilver series includes four different designs each inspired by a different Standard in LA, Miami and New York. For Downtown LA, Quiksilver chose its iconic Hokus Polkas print with red and white polka dots on a black background to complement The Standard, Downtown LA’s offbeat sense of humor. With Hollywood being all about “stars,” the design for its boardshort was taken from Quiksilver’s retro Stars boardshorts, once worn by Quiksilver’s biggest star, nine-time World Champion Kelly Slater. Miami and New York are both adapted from one of Quiksilver’s original boardshort designs, the OG Scallop.

In addition to thoughtful inspiration from retro Quiksilver designs, the boardshorts have been updated with modern fits, fabrics and technologies. Each boardshort features Quiksilver’s Diamond Dobby Technology™ – the ultimate in in-water performance, featuring no rash, perfect stretch, ultra lightweight and Quik dry. All the boardshorts come packaged in a specially designed odor resistant waterproof travel bag making it easy to go from the pool party to the suitcase. And to reflect the true collaboration of The Standard and Quiksilver, the Mountain and Wave logo was flipped upside down, and includes other subtle design details to separate these specially designed boardshorts apart from the rest.

These special details can also be found on the inside waistband of each boardshort. Each custom designed boardshort comes with a handpicked list of addresses corresponding to must-see destinations in the cities of each of the four hotels. These “Quik Tips” city guides, were hand picked and personally written by legendary skateboarder and Quiksilver Creative Director Natas Kaupas.

In celebration of the launch of the boardshorts and vending machine at The Standard, Downtown LA, Quiksilver in conjunction with Will Pennartz of The Surf Gallery and Stefan Jeremias, co-producer of “Echo Beach” the film, will curate an art show at The Standard, Downtown LA , from August 8-14, with a special reception featuring live music acts on Thursday, August 13th from 7-10pm. The show, titled “Echo Beach Retrospective 1978-1982: Surf Culture Art Exhibition,” pays tribute to the golden era of surfing, the period that produced the retro designs that inspired The Standard Boardshorts by Quiksilver series.
