2009 Alliance Superlatives

Wakeskate Video of the Year

Videos are arguably the most influential part of the rapid progression of wakeskating. Every year, at least one video comes that out that shows the masses things they never thought possible in the sport. And while wakeskating was blessed with several incredible videos in 2009, one stood out, not just based on the riding, but due of everything involved with it.

Nike 6.0’s team video Aquafrolics was hands down the best produced wakeskate video to date; a combination of quality filming, great editing and exotic locations. While there are been tons of great videos produced with little-to-no budget, Aquafrolics was able to take advantage of the greater resources of having a giant company behind it, to portray wakeskating in a way we’ve never really gotten to see it before.

Of course, the glitziest video would be nothing without good riding, and Aquafrolics had that too. Yes, it’s a team video, but that team happens to be one of the best all-around teams in wakeskating. Nick Taylor’s smooth and flawless riding, Andrew Pastura’s enormous bag of tricks, Ben Horan’s skateboard style and finally Matt Manzari’s mad man antics perfectly showcased what went on in wakeskating this year.

The skilled and creative filming of DP Matt Staker, including incredible overhead shots thanks to the “boat with wings,” set Aquafrolics apart once again. Finally, the video was released with much fanfare, and wakeskating’s biggest party, which was an incredible experience for those lucky enough to be invited. But the real kicker was this: The video was free online, to anyone who wanted to download it. And since it again had Nike 6.0’s marketing budget and reach behind it, that alone helped to expose more people to wakeskating than ever before. If that’s not worthy of an award, we don’t know what is.

The 2009 Alliance Superlatives recognize the outstanding athletes and more for the past year. They are chosen by the Alliance staff in collaboration with former Rider of the Year winners. Be sure to check out the new issue of Alliance Wakeboard Magazine for more.
