“The melan toe 3 might be my favorite trick – it feels like it flows better than anything else on a wakeboard. You can grab nearly the entire spin and hold the poke, which makes you feel like a real BA! Here’s how I get it done.” – Bob Soven

  1. Edging into the wake

You want to take a soft, even edge into the wake, keep the handle low by your hip and keep that chest tall. If you’re too hunched over you won’t get a solid enough pop and you’ll be off balance as soon as you’re in the air.

  1. Getting the pop

The big thing on this is to make sure you pop off the wake before you start your spin. So edge all the way through the top, keep the handle tight and work to pop off the top of the wake.

  1. Initiating spin and going for grab

I like to think of this trick as being a toeside melan grab with a late 360 added on the end. Pop off the wake and bring that board up to you but don’t start the spin yet, grab it IN-BETWEEN your bindings and poke your front leg to start to initiate the spin. Start to pull the handle with your back hand into your back hip to stay on axis and rotate.

  1. Holding grab and completing spin

Don’t let go! The longer you hold the better; and keep that leg poked for as long as you can. Continue rotating into the handle and keep with your eyes looking back over your front shoulder to start spotting the landing. If you kept the line tension right you can rotate into the handle/rope and almost land wrapped.

  1. Landing

Ok, now you can let go of that grab and spot your landing. Keep your chest over your toes, especially if you start to land with your back arm and the handle behind your back. Ride edging away from the wake and make that handle pass as soon as possible.

Three Keys

  1. Get a solid pop off the wake before starting the spin
  2. Get the grab early before spinning and hold onto it
  3. Keep the handle tight to make the 360 easier
